Changing the World - Helping the homeless

Posted by Guides

We have been working towards a badge called ‘Changing the World’, part of this badge involved finding out about the difficulties faced by people who unfortunately find themselves Homeless usually through no fault of their own.

We have found out about some of the difficulties faced by these people and no doubt there were a lot we never learnt about.

Although regrettably we are unable to resolve this situation in society we would like to show at least some of these people that we do care and do understand some of the problems they are meeting.

As a unit we have been collecting soaps and toiletries to make small overnight bags for some of your guests. We have added a pair of socks to these bags as we feel that although this does not solve the problem of homelessness everyone feels a lot more comfortable in clean dry socks.

We would like to wish all you guests a Peaceful Christmas and we all hope the New Year finds them the answers they are looking for.

We also made Christmas Cards with lots of glitter and feathers to give to the homeless.

On one of the snowy days before Christmas the gifts were delviered to the Winter Comfort Drop in Centre on Victoria Avenue.

Histon Guides - Changing the World

Posted by Guides

Histon Guides have been working towards the Change the World badge - we have taken pieces from lots of different areas we have enjoyed the variety and learnt a lot.

Crisis

Fighting for hope for homeless people

Histon Guides learnt about homelessness and the problems that are associated by putting on a number of short plays about young people who have been made homeless and how this affected their life, education and out look on life and how Crisis helped out.

We have a ‘Summer Patrol Challenge’ to collect mini soaps and men’s socks which we will give to one of the men’s shelters in September.

We Save the Children Will You?

Every year 10 million children die before they reach their 5th birthday

Histon Guides looked at ways that Save the Children help out in developing countries and Took part in the Guinness Book of Records Giant Sleep Over at which they held a sponsored sing in aid of this charity.

Woodland Trust

Helps look after the UK’s forests and protect all things great and small that live in them

.

Histon Guides learned about food chains, tree identification, worked out the age of a hedge row and learnt about trees in general.

We are planning to plant a tree later in the year to mark the Guiding Centenary.

British Red Cross

Help anyone, anywhere, in an emergency

Histon Guides have learnt some simple first aid an how to make emergency calls.

Friends of the Earth

Get people all over the world to work together for the sake of our planet.

Histon Guides have been thinking about Re-Cycling - wait for the Histon Feast Parade and Flower Show.

2nd Histon Brownies Change the World

Posted by 2ndHistonBrownies

sl3809472plastic-bag-fashion4The 2nd Histon Brownies have been learning about climate change and the problems of plastic rubbish polluting the sea with the WWF FUND Project.  We made mosaic pictures from plastic packaging to highlight the dangers to turtles and albatrosses when they eat this rubbish mistaking it for jelly fish.  You might have seen our pictures at the Village Greening Launch and we hope to display them at the Histon Baptist Church soon.

We also enjoyed a fabulous plastic bag fashion evening, had a visit from the local HICCA group and learnt about polar bears in the Arctic.  Next term we will be starting a new project so look out for our news.
